The Wisdom of Abhyanga

In Sanskrit, "Abhyanga" means "loving hands."  In Ayurveda, we massage regularly with carrier oils infused with herbs and/or essential oils specific to our current needs (vikruti).  "Sneha" refers to "oil" or "love".  Such as the experience of being loved, receiving Abhyanga can bring about the feeling of being loved and cared for.

It is suggested that we incorporate Abhyanga into our daily care regimen (dainacharya).

“The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to accidental injuries, or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts and becomes strong, charming and least affected by old age”

Charaka Samhita Vol. 1, V: 88-89
